How to do work without even trying

A big problem that I have is that I find it hard to start doing work and I’ve found this trick works quite well.

Step 1: Because I’m a list-maker I start by making a list – what needs to be done, what should be done and, most importantly some little tasks which are easy to do. So then I’ve made the list and suddenly all the things I should be doing look very, very scary sitting on a piece of paper.

Step 2: To reduce the overall scariness of the list I pick something easy or simple to do – printing off stuff, filing, cleaning etc.

Step 3: This is the key step – put music or a DVD (not a movie – something short) on or something else which is distracting and, most importantly, FUN

Step 4: Start the task – the music or DVD will distract you and make you feel productive at the same time

Step 5: Do the task. When it’s finished do the next thing on the list – if it’s another fun thing then keep the music/DVD on, if it’s not then turn it off. Because you’re already being productive chances are it’ll be easier to get down to the real work.

Step 6: Do the real work! Feel satisfied and productive and then relax!
